The philosophy behind the Dojo Band is working with sound in a tranquil and creative way. (The Dharma name I was given is Jyaku, meaning "tranquility"). The sounds created by its artists connect in a deep, spiritual, noncompetitive way, and also in a unique way, through the spontaneous creation of their music. In 1993 I thought of the name Dojo Band as a response to all the wonderful musicians who practiced at the Dojo. several practitioners of Buddhism and Aikido at the dojo, as well as other like-minded musicians formed the Dojo Band in 1996. Their first concert was at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. In 1999 the Dojo Band performed and recorded for the Knitting Factory archive series. They have also performed at Tonic and the Vision Festival. The original artists are: Joseph Jarman, Chris Chalfant, Jessica Jones, Tony Jones, Ken Filiano and Rob Garcia. This members eventually became the basis from which the Lifetime Visions Orchestra was built. |
