The Lifetime Visions Orchestra (LVO), a group of fifteen musicians in its full capacity, is led by Chris Chalfant and Joseph Jarman. It is a creative music ensemble which performs unconducted free improvisation, larger improvised compositions, and spiritual works by Joseph Jarman, including their signature song Lifetime Visions for the Magnificent Human. LVO's opening concert, intended to be a memorial tribute to John Coltrane on September 23, 2001, became a fitting and inspiring musical offering in honor and remembrance for the victims of the September 11 tragedy. Compositions by Chris Chalfant, Joseph Jarman, Ken Filiano, Jessica Jones, and Rob Garcia were performed. Thomas Buckner was featured in the concert. Other performers included Karen Borca, Mark Taylor and Steve Bernstein. LVO opened the 2002 Vision Festival in New York City, and then performed on the main stage at the Nancy Jazz Pulsations Festival. Recently they performed a special concert for Womenˆs Day at the New York African Methodist Episcopal Church, which featured improvising storyteller Richard Thomas. LVO continues to perform with eight or more players in festivals, clubs and for special projects.
LVOˆs first CD is Vision Festival 2002 on Jyaku Sound. Maintaining that creativity is limitless, the orchestra comprises musicians who have practiced such a philosophy for many years in their own established careers and who come together with a commitment to further extend this philosophy as a unified group of creative musicians. Each performance is unique and inspiring for performers and audience alike. The current roster of musicians is Chris Chalfant, piano, vocals, Joseph Jarman, woodwinds, Thomas Buckner, vocals, Richard Thomas, storyteller, Tony Jones, tenor saxophone, Jessica Jones, tenor saxophone, Cale Brandley, woodwinds, Pamela Fleming, trumpet, Steve Swell, trombone, Mark Taylor, french horn, Michael Braudy, violin, Rob Garcia, drums, Ken Yamazaki, percussion, Ken Filiano, bass, Chris Sullivan, bass, Adam Lane, bass. Previous members include Tomas Ulrich, cello, and Steve Bernstein, trumpet. Kali Z., woodwinds, Ravish Momin, tabla, and Steve Coleman, alto saxophone have performed with the Lifetime Visions Orchestra.
